Health Services Authority (HSA) recently published a case study evaluating the results of their journey towards People-Centered Primary Care in the Cayman Islands. As defined by World Health Organization (WHO), the term ‘People-Centered Health Care’ is not to be confused with patient-centered health care. People-Centered Health Care is an umbrella term which better encapsulates the foremost consideration of the patient across all levels of healthcare.
This journey at HSA resulted in numerous improvements in outcomes over the past year like a 60% increase in fall screenings, a 20-30% decrease in avoidable ER visits, and a 22% reduction in asthma and COPD admissions. HSA has many of the same population health challenges that healthcare organizations in the US, UK, and countries in Europe face. Patients are living more sedentary lifestyles and obesity, hypertension, and diabetes are more common now than ever.

HSA believes that the best way to improve outcomes and lower cost is to incentivize their physicians to keep their patient population healthy, a strategy they call People-Centered Primary Care. Regular screening is necessary so that patients don’t come to the emergency room unnecessarily, making sure they are on the proper medication if they are chronically ill, and monitoring the chronically ill patient from time to time to prevent admissions that will lead to increased cost. This will be of better value to both the patients and the provider.”

The Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (HSA) is the main provider of healthcare to the people of the Cayman Islands.
