The exceptional works of all 85 Nominees demonstrate the quintessential societal role of art – from every civilization in the world, from the beginning of time through today.

London, England (PRWEB) October 17, 2017 -- GFAA President and CEO Judy Holm and Advisory Board members are convening in London to present the nominations. She states, “It is an honor and a privilege to join Co-Host Peter Trippi and our Advisory Board to present the Nominations of the 2017 Global Fine Art Awards today. In addition to our existing awards, we are particularly proud to announce our two new awards, Global Planet and Global Humanity-whose Nominees are superb representations of efforts around the world to educate the public about the critical need for conservation of our planet and human benevolence."

The GFAA program recognizes sweeping period-themed exhibitions, shows with innovative perspectives of traditional subjects, and other exhibitions and public installations of individual artists or groups of artists’ works- featuring works by timeless masters, from Raphael and Rodin, to Mondrian and Monet, as well as some of the most important artists living today.

The program expanded this year to include two new awards – Global Planet and Global Humanity, whose Nominees include individual artists, as well as institutional initiatives shedding light on conservation and social issues respectively.

Nominees include exhibitions from many prominent museums across the globe: the British Museum, Royal Academy of Arts, Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate Britain and Tate Modern in London; Musée du Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, Centre Pompidou and Le Grand Palais in France; Palazzo Strozzi in Florence; Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam; Museo Nacional del Prado, Guggenheim Bilbao and Reina Sofia in Spain; National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea; Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei; New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and Smithsonian’s Freer and Sackler Galleries in Washington D.C.; San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), Legion of Honor and Asian Art Museum; Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

The 2017 Nominees with works by living artists include Yayoi Kusama, Kerry James Marshall, David Hockney, Jaume Plensa, Andy Goldsworthy, Tomás Saraceno, Shirin Neshat, Dia al-Azzawi, Slater B. Bradley, Li Chen, William Eggleston and Ai Weiwei.

Geographic, scale, ethnic and gender diversity are essential considerations in the research and nominating process. The 85 Nominees this year represent works from 6 continents, 28 countries and 60 cities – from Beijing to Boston, from Melbourne to Montréal. Nineteen percent (19%) of this year’s Nominees are created by or are about Asian and Middle Eastern art and artists. One of the most prominent awards – Best Contemporary and Post-War Art, features women in 3 of the 8 Nominees. Almost two-thirds of the Nominees emanate from smaller institutions and private initiatives, and the remaining 37% of the GFAA Nominees are from the top 100 art museums visited in the world (The Art Newspaper, April 2015).

The culmination of the year-long process to discover the best curated art and design exhibitions will be on Thursday, March 8, 2018 with the celebration of all Nominees and the presentation of the Winners of the 2017 Global Fine Art Awards. The black-tie gala will take place at the historic 583 Park Avenue in New York City.

The GFAA Judges will select winners in the following 13 award categories: Contemporary and Post-War- solo artist; Contemporary and Post-War- group or theme; Impressionist and Modern- solo artist; Impressionist and Modern- group or theme; Renaissance, Baroque, Old Masters and Dynasties- solo artist; Renaissance, Baroque, Old Masters and Dynasties- group or theme; Ancient Art; Photography; Design; Fringe; Public Art, and the two new awards – Global Planet and Global Humanity. Youniversal, and YOU-2 are the two final awards, are given to the most popular nominees, and are selected by public voting on the GFAA website and social media. GFAA Finalists will be announced in January 2018, with the launch of the YOUNIVERSAL Award.

About the GFAA Program
The GFAA program honors innovation and excellence in exhibition design, historical context, educational value, and public appeal. The program’s mission is to develop interest and passion for fine art, and to further its educational role in society.

GFAA is the first annual program ever created to recognize the best curated art and design exhibitions and installations worldwide. This program includes exhibitions in museums, galleries, art fairs and biennials, as well as public installations.

Vision
Elevate the importance and relevancy of fine art in the world today: economically, socially, and culturally.

The GFAA judging, research and nominating processes
A broad set of criteria is utilized to research and assess the prospective nominees, with continuous review of over 50 sources of print and online art editorial and critiques. Through these sources, more than 200 museums and 2,000 exhibitions are vetted during the annual art research as well as personalized assessments based on exhibition viewing.

In addition to the research-based nominations, GFAA accepts open calls from museums, biennials, fairs, galleries and other art organizations. Individual patrons may nominate their favorite exhibitions as well.

The Nominating Committee reviews the slate prepared by the Art Research Committee, and presents their findings and final approvals to the Judges. The Judges modify and select the final slate of Nominees, then vote on the Finalists and Winners. The timeframe for eligibility this year was for exhibitions and installations opening between Aug 1, 2016 and Jul 31, 2017. The basic criteria for eligibility is that each nominated exhibit must be curated.

Nominees and winners for the thirteen awards are selected by a panel of expert judges. Another integral aspect of the GFAA program is to engage the general public, and include their voice in the program results. Members of the general public vote online for their favorite nominee on the GFAA website. The most popular exhibition wins the final award -Youniversal. Another public award is YOU-2, selected from twitter votes.

GFAA Team
Led by President and CEO Judy Holm, more than 30 dedicated professionals with extensive experience in art, academia, technology and business are committed to the future of the Global Fine Art Awards program and its mission. They represent a truly global perspective, with nationalities from 18 countries and 4 continents.

About the Leighton House Museum and Lawrence Alma-Tadema
Leighton House Museum is the former home of the Victorian artist Frederic, Lord Leighton (1830-1896). The only purpose-built studio-house open to the public in the United Kingdom, it is one of the most remarkable buildings of the nineteenth century, containing a fascinating collection of paintings and sculpture by Leighton and his contemporaries.

Alma-Tadema: At Home in Antiquity is the largest exhibition devoted to the artist to be held in London since 1913. It explores the career of Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836 - 1912), his fascination with the representation of domestic life in antiquity, and how this interest was expressed through the two remarkable studio-houses that he created in London. The exhibition finds a perfect setting in Leighton’s own studio-house, interiors known to the Alma-Tademas as frequent callers.
