G-CON Manufacturing to Expand and Enhance the Capability of the Installed Portable, Continuous, Miniature, and Modular POD® Facility at Pfizer’s R&D site in Groton

POD facility will now include tablet coating and incorporate GEA’s ConsiGma™ continuous table coater.

PCMM POD Facility

The PCMM POD facility currently installed at Pfizer was designed with the flexibility for future expansion in mind.

G-CON Manufacturing, the leader in prefabricated, flexible cleanroom solutions, will further expand its Portable, Continuous, Miniature, and Modular (PCMM) collaboration with Pfizer and GEA by designing and building additional PODs and integrating them into the existing POD-based Oral Solid Dosage line. The new PODs will provide tablet coating capability in the existing line at Pfizer’s site in Groton, Conn. G-CON will work closely with GEA to integrate their leading-edge ConsiGma™ Continuous Tablet Coater equipment within the PODs.

The additional PODs will occupy approximately 700 square feet of area adjacent to the existing PCMM PODs and will include a film coating process area, dedicated airlocks for personnel and material, and an integrated technical space for the G-CON and GEA mechanical systems. The GEA equipment will be integrated in the PODs and tested prior to delivery to further reduce the time and complexity of installation at the Groton site and minimize the downtime of Pfizer’s current operations.

The ConsiGma™ coater from GEA is a high performance tablet coating technology that gently and accurately deposits controlled amounts of coating materials on tablets — even if they are extremely hygroscopic or friable. Designed specifically to be an integral part of the ConsiGma™ continuous tableting lines, the ConsiGma™ coater is able to process small quantities of tablets at very high rates, offering improved heat and mass transfer.

“The PCMM POD facility currently installed at Pfizer was designed with the flexibility for future expansion in mind,” said Dennis Powers, Director of Sales Engineering at G-CON Manufacturing. “We are very excited and grateful for the opportunity to design and build the additional PODs for Pfizer that will further enhance their capability to manufacture tablets for their patients.”

About Pfizer’s PCMM Technology

Pfizer’s PCMM technology is a first-of-a-kind continuous manufacturing system that accelerates tablet production. The pharmaceutical industry has been trending toward lower-volume products, driven by an increased focus on precision medicine approaches to develop and commercialize new therapies. This creates a need for smaller, more flexible continuous processing technologies.

By miniaturizing the equipment, the continuous process can be enclosed in a portable, autonomous space called a POD, which can be transported to any location in the world and quickly assembled.

The PCMM technology has the potential to transform the current biopharmaceutical industry standard of using batch processing to manufacture tablets and capsules from powders—an oftentimes complex process that requires large, dedicated manufacturing facilities. The PCMM continuous process takes only minutes from the addition of raw materials to the completion of finished tablets or capsules.

Highlights of PCMM’s potential for smaller, more flexible, continuous processing technologies include:

A PCMM facility has a 60 to 70% smaller footprint than a conventional production facility.

PCMM enables use of the same equipment for development, clinical trials and commercial manufacturing.

A PCMM facility takes about one year to set up and start running, compared to two to three years for standard processes.
