250,000 Seniors Sign Petition to Protect Social Security
Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) September 21, 2017 -- The Seniors Center has collected 250,000 signed petitions demanding that Congress act immediately to protect and restore the Social Security Trust Fund.
The Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization organizes grassroots advocacy campaigns on behalf of senior citizens. The Seniors Center President Dan Perrin shared this milestone with the thousands of supporters who made this grassroots effort possible:
“These voters have spoken, and they overwhelmingly agree Congress must take action to secure Social Security funds for their original intended purpose: paying the Social Security benefits of American retirees and beneficiaries,” Perrin said.
In a three-pronged campaign, utilizing traditional mail, online ads, and social media -- a relatively new outreach method for the organization -- The Seniors Center has reached voters in every Congressional district for the first time.
The Seniors Center’s “Trust Fund Emergency Petition to Congress” directs members of the 115th Congress of the United States to:
- Permanently end the practice of spending surplus Social Security income on general U.S. government expenditures;
- Legally require all monies collected via the FICA payroll tax be retained solely for the payment of Social Security benefits; and slowly repay, over time, all money taken from the combined Social Security Trust Funds.
Perrin believes only by taking these critical first steps can Congress truly begin to address Social Security’s insolvency, projected by the Social Security Board of Trustees’ to occur as soon as 2034.
The Seniors Center will continue to build support for their petition online and by mail. The organization has already begun to send their petitions to Capitol Hill to motivate Congress to prioritize Social Security beneficiaries and the Trust Fund they depend on.
Perrin and The Seniors Center invite all concerned Americans--both current and future Social Security beneficiaries--to join them in their nationwide push to gain support for the “Trust Fund Emergency Petition to Congress” and keep Social Security for Social Security beneficiaries only.
Those interested in adding their name may find the petition on The Seniors Center website right here.
The Seniors Center is a program of Our Generation, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization.
