Greenberg Traurig's Kurt Kappes and Howard Silverman to Speak at the AACT National Technical Seminar
(PRWEB) September 27, 2017 -- Global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP’s Kurt A. Kappes and Howard E. Silverman will speak at the American Association of Candy Technologists’ (AACT) National Technical Seminar in Oak Brook, Illinois, Oct. 3. Their session, “Patent, Trademark, Trade Secrets and Other IP Concerns in the Confections Industry,” takes place at 11:20 a.m. at the Hyatt Lodge at McDonald’s Campus.
Kappes and Silverman will outline the key elements of the ways to protect intellectual property in the confections industry, including the pros and cons to guarding patents, trademarks, and trade secrets. Examples will illustrate how confectioners and related industries seek to differentiate and protect their methods, products, and brands.
The event will bring together approximately 300 technologists in the sweet goods industry. The presentation topics range from the basics to innovations, providing the entire industry with practical information to help in understanding processes and ingredients used by their companies. Kappes is co-managing shareholder of the firm’s Sacramento office and co-chair of its Labor & Employment Practice’s Complex Employment Litigation & Trials group. He counsels clients on trade secrets and employee mobility issues. He has also represented clients in labor and employment issues, including advisory matters, trade secret audits, contracts, discrimination claims, whistleblower cases, and wrongful termination litigation. Kappes received his J.D. (1986) from Northwestern University, Pritzker School of Law, his B.A. (1983), summa cum laude, from Butler University. He is also a Visiting Lecturer at UC Davis King Hall School of Law
Silverman is co-chair of the Chicago office’s Intellectual Property & Technology Practice. He concentrates his practice on U.S and international patent, trademark, and copyright matters, with a focus on IP portfolio management, negotiating complex transactions and acquiring and licensing technology and intellectual property. His experience includes overseeing all aspects of the patent and trademark portfolios of large, middle market, and startup entities, including the preparation of patent and trademark opinions, litigation, and IP securitization. Silverman received his J.D. (1984) from Washington University in St. Louis, School of Law, and his B.S.E.E. (1981) from Purdue University, West Lafayette.
