Children’s dentistry, or pediatric dentistry, is a specific service aimed at the unique needs of children and teens. Keeping baby teeth healthy sets the stage for a lifetime of strong oral health, and ensures that while the child has them, speaking and eating are not affected. Yet according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, dental caries are 5 times more common than asthma and 7 times more common than hay fever among young children.

Frequently Asked Questions About Children’s Dentistry

1. When should a child first begin dental care?
According to the American Dental Association (ADA), a baby’s mouth should be checked shortly after the first tooth comes in, or around 12 months of age. This visit is generally handled by a pediatrician. At around age 3, most children are able to brush their teeth with help, and are ready to start visiting a children’s dentist.

2. How much toothpaste should a child use?
Babies under age 2 should not use toothpaste at all, due the risks of swallowing it. Kids ages 2 to 4 should use a drop of toothpaste about the size of a pea. Older kids can use the same amount of toothpaste as adults, but should always be taught to spit out excess rather than swallowing it.

3. What if a child knocks out a tooth?
Parents or caregivers should stay calm and locate the tooth. It should be placed immediately in milk (not water) to preserve it. Bleeding can be stopped with pressure. Time is of the essence to reattach the tooth, so the child and the tooth must be taken to an emergency dentist right away.
