Four Signs Your Child Needs An Orthodontic Appointment

Propel Orthodontics informs parents of common indicators that braces are in the future

Sometimes it is obvious to parents that their children will need orthodontia, especially when adult teeth erupt at extreme angles, very far apart, or are overlapping. But other indicators can be more difficult to spot because they are not as obvious as crooked teeth. In fact, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that children visit an orthodontist no later than age seven to catch any developing problems and create a treatment plan. Propel Orthodontics, a leading innovator, manufacturer and worldwide seller of orthodontic devices, also recommends that parents keep an eye out for these common signs that could warrant a trip to the orthodontist before age seven.

Misaligned Bite – Teeth could look straight when your child smiles or talks, but crooked teeth are not the only problem orthodontia can solve. Over bites, under bites, cross bites and other issues with jaw alignment can also be corrected.

Baby Teeth Never Fall Out – Baby teeth that fall out extremely early, extremely late, or never at all can create problems for permanent teeth. There can be issues with overcrowding that causes permanent teeth to shift into abnormal positions. Or if a permanent tooth is not present the child might need a baby tooth extracted and permanent teeth moved using braces or other methods to fill the void.

Thumb Sucking – Children who suck their thumbs long past infancy can cause damage to their teeth. Habitual thumb sucking can cause permanent teeth to shift due to the constant pressure being placed on the gums and jaw.

Challenges with Chewing or Talking – If your child regularly bites his or her tongue, the inside of a cheek or has problems enunciating words these can all be signs of underlying problems with the jaw or teeth.
