Joseph Brisben showcases the dangers of greed, anger and revenge

Nearly 30 percent of women say they have been involved in an abusive relationship, according to the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence. One common side effect of abuse is the feeling of entrapment. Author Joseph Brisben shows how one woman’s feeling of captivity led her to drastic measures in “Marvin’s Garden.”

“Marvin’s Garden” opens with Madge Duckworth’s ghost lingering over her husband’s, Marvin, corpse. She contemplates their complex relationship and shares the bouts of the cruelty and neglect she suffered at the hands of her spouse. She recounts her long-standing plot to murder her husband, and her diagnosis with breast cancer that foiled her plan. Marge also narrates the role a young farm hand, Betty Buckley played in her marriage and battle with cancer.

After her passing, Madge’s ghost returns to watch over Betty as her guardian angel. She witnesses Marvin manipulating the farm girl just has he had with his late wife. She also gets to observe as her revenge plot finally coming to fruition.

“Relationships that involve abuse are very complex and layered,” Brisben said. “Marvin’s Garden shows the depth with which people need to go to live with or overcome crudity. In the same right, I believe it highlights that karma will always win out.”
