Mr. Aswad, who is a licensed manicurist, skin care professional and makeup artist, has completed his new book “One of Those Vets”: a riveting story of survival following rejection from family, a suicide attempt, and six separate instances of homelessness.
According to Aswad, “I finally received my veteran’s benefits in 2014. I graduated from my first ‘tour of duty’ in beauty school with a license in skin care in 2013 while still living in a homeless shelter in West Los Angeles. My second ‘tour of duty’ landed me a license in manicuring in 2014, along with my first new home after four years of homelessness. After volunteering in homeless shelters and doing skin care and makeovers for homeless women, I moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where I live and work today.”
Published by New York City-based Page Publishing, Mr. Aswad’s emotional work details his entering basic training in the Navy in 1981. Eighteen days later, his dream of a career as a naval officer and eventually a lawyer was shattered by a brutal rape by the very men he served with. He was homeless six times, was fired from jobs more times than he could count, and depended on the kindness of “friends.”
Aswad always felt like the outsider. He was too white for black people, too straight for gay people, and too conservative for liberal people. He was a man without a country. Yet while still in a homeless shelter, he obtained a license in skin care then a license in manicuring. He later became a makeup artist. This is the story of one of those vets, from American nightmare to American Dream.
