Hurricane Irma caused extensive damage across the Florida peninsula as the storm barreled through the state. Since the storm passed, local businesses and facilities have been assessing the damage and starting the clean-up. MaintenX International is here to help with disaster recovery tips.

“Assessing damage and beginning repairs can seem overwhelming after a major storm,” said Bill Schaphorst, VP of Business Development at MaintenX International. “Having a recovery plan is important to help things return to normal as quickly as possible.”

MaintenX International has been helping Florida businesses recover from storms for more than 30 years. Here are a few tips to help get your company back on track:

1.    Assess Damages
Carefully assess damages from outside your building. Wind and water can make structures unstable and dangerous. Do not enter any building if there is a chance it could collapse. If there is flooding, turn off power at the main breaker or fuse to reduce the chance of electrical shock before entering. Once the building is safe to enter, make note of the repairs and salvage activites you need.

2.    Address Short Term Needs
Addressing key needs quickly can help you get back to business as soon as possible. Restoring communications and IT services, creating updated work schedules for staff, and identifying alternative locations to conduct business can help you resume services while you make a longer-term plan.

3.    Plan Long Term Recovery
Not all repairs will be able to be made quickly. File any necessary claims with your insurance agent as soon as possible. It is also wise to contact any contractors for services like fencing, drywall repair, or document salvage, as they will book up quickly after a hurricane. You will also want to place orders for any equiptment that needs to be replaced.

4.    Use What You Learned
While you may want to just forget about the entire experience, noting your company’s strengths and weaknesses before, during, and after the storm can help you update your Disaster Preperation Plan. By planning ahead, you can help reduce the chance of an emergency and limit the damage caused during a storm.
