Kognito LGBTQ Anti-bullying Role-Play Simulation Added to SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices
New York, NY (PRWEB) October 11, 2017 -- Kognito announced today that its simulation, Step In, Speak Up!, has received the highest rating from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s (SAMHSA) National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP). The simulation is the fifth Kognito program to be listed in NREPP and the only simulation listed that supports LGBTQ youth and anti-bullying efforts. To date, more than 10,000 educators have engaged with this simulation, which has been shown to transform educators’ attitudes and self-confidence in addressing use of biased language and other forms of harassment.
Step In, Speak Up! is a professional development role-play simulation for educators that builds understanding and appreciation for the challenges faced by LGBTQ youth - including bullying, absenteeism, homelessness, and thoughts of suicide. Educators practice conversations with virtual students to prepare them to lead real-life conversations with students to curtail harassment and support those who may be struggling as a result of bullying or isolation. In its review, SAMHSA stated that the program “is effective… (and) yielded strong evidence of a favorable effect.”
Surveys conducted with educators who had completed the simulation, found that three months after completing it:
- Half (50%) of respondents reported an increase in the number of students they connected to support services because they were being teased, harassed or bullied.
- More than half (56%) of respondents reported an increase of the number of students they talked with after class to check to see if a teased, harassed or bullied student is OK.
- Nearly half (47%) of respondents reported an increase in the number of students they intervened with when the student revealed they were LGBTQ and being teased, harassed or bullied.
“Step In, Speak Up! is a powerful tool for creating a more safe, respectful, and inclusive school community,” said Ron Goldman, Co-Founder & CEO of Kognito. “Inclusion in the National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices supports the efforts by many of clients including Step In, Speak Up! as a key part of their efforts to improve school climate and connectedness.”
