SAVANNAH, Ga. (PRWEB) November 07, 2017
During November 2017, Savannah Dental Solutions is offering a complimentary sedation dentistry consultation.
Thanks to modern dental techniques, virtually pain-free dentistry is now a reality. Still, dental fears and phobias are remarkably common, leading to dentist avoidance. For people who fear the dentist, sedation dentistry may be just what is needed.
There are three basic types of dental sedation.
1. Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a very mild form of sedation. The patient wears a mask over her nose to deliver a carefully balanced blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Deep relaxation is achieved, but the patient remains awake and can remove the mask at any time, making this an excellent choice for those who are afraid of being sedated. When the mask is removed, the effects wear off within a few minutes, making it safe to drive home.
2. Oral Sedation
Oral sedation in pill form is a bit stronger than nitrous oxide. Depending on the exact medication and dosage, sedation may be mild or moderate. The patient can still respond to instructions from the dentist, but may be drowsy or even fall lightly asleep. Oral sedation can leave the patient feeling groggy for the rest of the day, so it is essential to bring a driver to the appointment.
3. IV Sedation
IV sedation is the strongest form of dental sedation that is provided outside of a hospital setting. It may be moderate or deep, and it is common to fall asleep in the chair. Unlike general anesthesia, patients with IV sedation can be easily roused, but will remain quite sleepy and out of it for the next 24 hours. It is important for patients to bring someone to drive them home and stay with them for the rest of the day.
