Earth Friendly Products CEO Continues Her Tradition of Using Recyclable Materials from Manufacturing to Create Unique Sustainable Costumes for Halloween

Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks, president and CEO of Earth Friendly Products®, models three sustainable Halloween costumes made entirely from remnant and recyclable materials from her manufacturing facility.

“Halloween brings out the creativity in all of us, and it’s a great opportunity to show that we can use discarded everyday materials to create fun costumes,” says Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks, president and CEO of Earth Friendly Products®.

Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks, president and CEO of Earth Friendly Products®, continued her tradition of creating a greener Halloween by partnering with innovative costume designer Diana Rennie to create a one-of-a-kind upcycled “Queen of Hearts” costume made entirely of recyclable materials.

Designed by California-based Rennie, who works with clients such as the Disneyland Resort and Cirque du Soleil, the Tim Burton–inspired Queen of Hearts gown was made using remnant materials from the manufacturing of the company’s ECOS™ environmentally friendly cleaning products. Soap pumps, plastic bottles, label backings, and cardboard were repurposed to create the stunning gown.

“This was an exciting and truly unique project. The challenge was to use remnant ECOS™ packaging and manufacturing materials to create a design on par with the elaborate costumes I create for the entertainment industry,” says Rennie. “Remnant soap pumps became hearts for the crown, collar, and scepter, and I cut cardboard label cores and recyclable plastic bottles to make the collar and sleeves. I also used recyclable plastic garbage bags to create the bodice and petticoat.”

Vlahakis-Hanks has commissioned several stunning upcycled Halloween costumes, partnering with fashion designers on costumes such as Star Wars’ Queen Amidala and Marie Antoinette in past years.

“Halloween brings out the creativity in all of us, and it’s a great opportunity to show that we can use discarded everyday materials to create fun costumes,” says Vlahakis-Hanks. “Creating an upcycled costume helps me remember to think green all year long. There are thousands of ways to find great new uses for discarded items.”

Vlahakis-Hanks adds, “By choosing to skip the plastic, store-bought costumes and make your own design, you’ll not only have fun expressing your creative side, you’ll reduce your impact on landfills and help protect our planet.”
