In her new book, “Smile with Simon” (published by Lulu), Patricia Ann Simon R.N., shares a story of a bird named Simon and girl named Patty who bond when they realize they both have scars.

“There are very few books out there for children that address facial differences,” says Simon. “Respect people for their physical and emotional differences.”

Simon, a bright, red cardinal, hatched from his shell with a big gap in his beak. Patty was born with a cleft lip and palate. Simon and Patty become friends when they realize they both have a “badge of courage.” They may both have a scar but that does not stop them from realizing that they are beautiful. Because of Patty, Simon realizes it’s ok to be different. He helps teach his friends – Fallon, Susie, Pixie, Coco, Jose, Pete and Mark – that everyone is special in their own way.

“(The book) speaks to children and adults,” Simon says. “It’s a message for everyone reminding them that it’s ok to be different. Extend your hand to others and be kind. Just because someone looks or acts differently doesn’t make them any less of a person. They have the same feelings as everyone else.”
