The onset of fall and the end of Daylight Saving time on Sunday, November 5, means that days are getting shorter and nightfall is coming earlier. The time is now to check your lighting systems indoor and out.

“Having well-functioning, welcoming lighting is a great way to improve the look of your facility,” said Bill Schaphorst, MaintenX’s VP of Business Development. “From increasing productivity to helping reduce electricity costs, there are a number of ways that proper lighting can positively impact your business.”

MaintenX International has been helping local businesses with lighting and electrical assistance for more than 30 years. Here are some tips to help be sure your building is properly lit:

1.    Outdoor Visibility: As nighttime arrives earlier, its important your customers and employees can still see and safely access your facility. Provide lighting for your major entryways, parking lot, and any other areas that are frequently accessed. You should also take a close look at your signage and install either an illuminated sign or flood lighting to help your customers know you welcome their business.

2.    Ecofriendly Options: Changing to green lighting options is good for the environment and your wallet. Switching from incandescent to compact fleorescent light (CFL) bulbs or LEDs can help reduce your energy costs and reduce pollution. Mirrors can also help reflect ambient light and help to brighten up a space without using additional energy. Installing motion-sensor lighting is also a great option for spaces that get used less frequently.

3.    Right Light, Better Motivation: Using natural lighting when possible is ideal, however not every workplace has large windows or daytime work shifts. When natural light is not available, the lighting choices you make have an impact on employee productivity. Eye-strain, headaches, and difficulty focusing as some issues that can affect workers under lighting that is too bright or too dim. Task lamps can help provide the proper amount of illumination based on the user.
