MHS student developed award-winning plan to help others after traveling to Peru

“The Education First summit challenged my pre-existing thoughts about the quality of education, collaboration, and diversity,” Katie said.

Recently, Milton Hershey School high school senior Katie Muir was presented with a $500 grand prize to assist in launching her global non-profit initiative to provide students across the nation with multicultural education and leadership experiences. She was honored with the award from Education First, a global education organization.

Katie and a group of Milton Hershey School® high school students traveled to Peru in spring 2017 for a 9-day international trip and global leadership summit organized by Education First. The summit encouraged students to think about global citizenship and use an online platform called weShare to investigate a particular challenge during the trip and reflect on it when they returned home.

“The Education First summit challenged my pre-existing thoughts about the quality of education, collaboration, and diversity,” Katie said. “It was a life-changing experience that inspired me to create a non-profit organization called “Our Project” to impact the global community through education and leadership.”

Katie’s non-profit, “Our Project,” incorporates lessons and ideas she learned at the summit to implement a global curriculum that could be utilized in schools to provide 21st century learners with character-building and leadership skills, resources and experiences to help to help build their global mindset.

“We want our students to be competitive in the global workforce, but also learn to be compassionate,” said Andrew Miller, social studies curriculum supervisor at MHS. “Katie’s project is recognized by Education First because it exemplifies the characteristics of a global citizen as she seeks to equip students with the tools to face emerging global challenges.”

Milton Hershey School’s multicultural and global education program provides students with opportunities to gain worldly experiences and global awareness through international trips. More information can be found at mhskids.org.
