MaintenX International has provided more than 30 years of disaster response to businesses across the country. Here are some of their top tips for getting back to business after a fire:
1. Stay Safe: After intially assessing your facility, you may find portions of the building that have severe damage. Block off any areas that have become unsafe – both to protect anyone who enters the building and also to prevent additional damage. Fire and water can damage electrical appliances, so check your systems before turning them on to reduce the risk of creating a short-circuit. If you feel overwhelmed, don’t hesistate to call a professional to help with restoration and repairs.
2. Ventilate: After a fire is put out, you’ll want to ventilate your property as soon as possible. This can help reduce further smoke damage. Open windows and doors. Shut off your HVAC system in order to reduce the spead of smoke. You can also set up industrial fans to face outside and help draw out additional smoke.
3. Property Clean Up: Fire damage means major clean up. Be sure to wipe down walls, doors and countertops. Any hard surfaces should be cleaned – dry sponges can help with soot, while a mild alcohol spray can remove more stubborn stains; be careful not to used water-based cleaner on plaster walls, however, as it may cause stains to sink in further. Don’t forget to wipe or replace light bulbs. It’s also recommended to replace HVAC filters, as they can trap soot and smoke odors.
