University System of Maryland Partners With HelioCampus to Analyze System-Wide USMx MOOC Data

HelioCampus, a technology-enabled services company that combines technology with ongoing data science services, is working with the University System of Maryland on their edX initiative, USMx (https://www.edx.org/school/usmx).

HelioCampus, a technology-enabled services company that combines technology with ongoing data science services, is working with the University System of Maryland on their edX initiative, USMx (https://www.edx.org/school/usmx). HelioCampus is serving as the data czar for the USMx courses, totaling over 100,000 enrollments since its launch in July of 2016 (http://www.usmd.edu/newsroom/news/1633).

The ability to explore and mine the data across the USMx platform was a primary driver of this partnership between The University System of Maryland (USM) and HelioCampus. Key questions the System is trying to answer include how to best identify and recruit students from USMx programs who may eventually enroll at a Maryland school and how students are engaging and performing in USMx courses and programs. The initial reports provided by HelioCampus have been related to marketing and enrollment so USM can understand who is potentially coming to the System with certificates in hand.

“HelioCampus is already giving me feedback on things to consider regarding the data, based now on design and student success, so that we can have better passage rates, better engagement, more meaningful dialogue, and real impact in our courses,” said Paul Walsh, Program Director, USMx.

“Learner analytics is a critical area for us to understand the patterns and trends that lead to better student outcomes and ultimately student success. We were thrilled when presented with the opportunity to partner with University System of Maryland on such a groundbreaking initiative. The early evidence of our work having a positive impact on student engagement and performance is promising and the team very much looks forward to the next phase of the project,” said HelioCampus CEO, Darren Catalano.
