Arizona Interior Designer Bonnie J. Lewis Wins First Place Commercial Design Award from American Society of Interior Designers
PHOENIX (PRWEB) November 09, 2017 -- Bonnie J. Lewis, principal and founder of 55+ TLC Interior Design, LLC, was awarded first place in the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Arizona North Chapter 2017 Design Excellence Competition in the Commercial Universal Design / Aging in Place category.
One of three awards Lewis won in this year’s competition, first place was given to Lewis for her unique remodel design of a reception area for a senior living community. Ensuring the new space would eliminate clutter and include an additional workstation, Lewis designed the area to be ADA-compliant for full accessibility.
“It was important that we combined a contemporary design with an accessible and supportive area for residents and guests,” Lewis said. “We wanted the space to be welcoming and inclusive of special needs, keeping the area safe and functional with a variety of supportive elements while providing an aesthetically pleasing environment that felt welcoming.”
Lewis updated the design to include a hospitality aesthetic and a unique, contemporary design. She a custom designed an ADA-compliant reception desk with a storage cabinet and a security gate to contain clutter and custom cabinets with beautiful square knobs for easy gripping that also provide lockable storage and further eliminate clutter.
Tall transaction counters provide access to built-in iPads for fast self-service sign in, while two adjoining lower counters allow for wheelchair access and personalized service. To create a welcoming feel, Lewis added accent lights and a 3-D focal point, sustainable wall treatment.
The accessible and stunning space received top marks in the new Commercial - Universal Design/Aging in Place category, which was initiated to focus on inclusive designs and broad-spectrum ideas meant to produce buildings, products, and environments that are inherently accessible. Lewis has a passion for creating universal and aging-in-place design spaces, helping clients make the most out of their space while providing safety, functionality, and beauty for residents and their families, caregivers and operations staff.
“It’s such an honor to receive this award,” Lewis said. “My company is dedicated to solving design problems with evidenced-based, code-compliant design to support the specific needs of older adults while being beautiful and uplifting, and helping people live longer, healthier lives.”
Lewis also won Honorable Mention in the Commercial – Element category for her stunning interior design of a private dining room at a senior living community. The space included slip-resistant flooring, new lighting, a senior-friendly color palette, and a mobility-device accessible furniture selection and arrangement. The main feature was a custom 1,000-year old reclaimed wood piece, a permanent wall element to create an inviting, biophilic-designed environment. The piece also featured a mirror, a shelf with accessories, and bow-tie insets.
