The Unity Economic Development Corporation Kicks Off Annual Fund Drive on #GivingTuesday 2017
Suitland, MD (PRWEB) November 17, 2017 -- The Unity Economic Development Corporation (Unity EDC) is kicking off their annual fund drive on #GivingTuesday, November 28, 2017. Ms Angela Fraser from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) lauded the Unity EDC for their positive impact on the community. They are looking for at least 400 people to make a tax-deductible donation of at least $25 between #GivingTuesday and December 31, 2017.
Unity EDC, an award-winning 501(c)3 HUD-approved housing counseling agency located in Suitland, MD, has provided foreclosure prevention counseling, homebuyer education, volunteer income tax preparation services, and financial literacy services in the Southern Maryland region since 2002.
For example, Unity EDC helped a 53-year-old Maryland resident who attended a Unity EDC homebuyer education workshop after being prequalified by a lender. Even after prequalification, he was unsure if he could afford to buy a home with his annual income of $42,000. He completed the workshop and earned a certificate that gave him access to various programs that assist first-time homeowners with down payments and/or closing costs. Four months later, he informed the Unity EDC that he found a house and was ready to close. He indicated that he was more confident after the workshop and was able to use the information he gathered from the session to purchase a home for $120,000 in a short sale.
“Through Unity’s housing counseling program, more than 1000 homeowners in the community have received critical advice and support to navigate the daunting foreclosure process,” said Ms. Fraser, speaking at Unity EDC’s Open House event on October 28, 2017. “Your impact has been much broader and that,” she continued. “You should really be proud of the work that you do and the impact that you have on the community. Considering how devastating the loss of a home can be, it is really no exaggeration to say that your impact is nothing more than life-changing.”
“We don’t turn away clients,” said Mrs. Virginia Callis, Executive Director of Unity EDC. “Much of the grant funding for foreclosure prevention is drying up, but when other housing counseling agencies don’t answer the phone, we do.”
“The work continues and there will always be a need,” said Ms. Fraser. “I just want to spread the word about the great work that Unity does and to keep clients coming in the door. We have a great resource here in the community and we have to keep it going.”
Donors can make their tax-deductible donation of at least $25 to help Unity EDC keep going by visiting the Unity EDC website at http://www.unityEDC.org or by mailing their donation to the Unity Economic Development Corporation, 508 Allentown Rd., Suite 309, Suitland, MD 20746. Online donations are secured through PayPal’s payment processing system.
