EfficientIP Selected by Worcester Polytechnic Institute for all Campus Network Communications
WEST CHESTER, Pa. (PRWEB) November 21, 2017 -- Research University gains extreme flexibility and cost-effectiveness with SOLIDserver™
EfficientIP, a leading provider of network services, today announced Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), an internationally acclaimed private research university in Massachusetts, USA, has selected its SOLIDserver™ DDI (DNS-DHCP-IPAM) solution to streamline its network infrastructure.
WPI delivers all network communications to a demanding user base of approximately 2,000 graduate and 4,000 undergraduate students, along with 500 faculty and 400 staff members who need access to network communications 24/7. The selection follows a competitive review in which vendors were analyzed on ease of integration, cost and customization.
For over ten years, WPI used a powerful IT network system called NetReg developed by Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). However, due to a lack of development resources this project stagnated and was abandoned by CMU in 2008. To ensure campus network communications including routing, switching and wireless, as well as core services such as DNS and DHCP, continued to function, WPI needed to find a best-of-breed solution with good integration.
With a clear set of requirements in mind, Frank Sweetser, Director of Network Operations, and his team started researching IPAM solutions from multiple mainstream vendors. However, after a thorough evaluation of their options, none proved sufficiently flexible to meet their business needs. WPI then widened the net and began searching for alternative IPAM, DNS, and DHCP solutions. The team came across EfficientIP and its SOLIDserver.
Following an extensive whiteboard session organized by EfficientIP, the WPI team was impressed by the EfficientIP’s engineers’ ability to easily tweak the behavior of the product, and explain, step by step, how they could fill the gaps in WPI’s systems (in addition to the solution costing less than others).
Commenting on choosing EfficientIP, Frank Sweetser said: “EfficientIP met all our business and technical needs. It did this at a better price point than its competitors.” However, EfficientIP engineers’ approachability and understanding of WPI’s situation was the biggest win, according to Sweetser. “Their transparency around the details of the product has really helped us fully understand how the system works and make effective long-term plans, as well as resolve technical issues as they came up.”
The whole implementation process has taken six months in total, which according to Sweetser, is shorter than other projects of this scope. “There are always going to be little pitfalls you didn’t anticipate, but thanks to the flexibility of EfficientIP, we were able to meet the needs of our demanding user base,” he added.
In the future, WPI is planning to focus on transition to the new platform for the next six to twelve months. The three main goals of the Institute will be related to enabling the DNS infrastructure, using the system as a stepping stone for IPv6 and increasing amount of automation roll-outs in their Data Center operations.
