In The Dark: A Memoir of Religious Initiation, Doubt, Rebellion, and Discovery” (published by WestBow Press in June of 2016) is the life story of Scott Stickney who was born and raised on the front lines of organized religion during the decade of the 1960s. This is a book for readers who are suspicious or sometimes uncomfortable with the ways of organized religion, and yet are open to a vital and life‐changing connection with God.

Set for a new marketing campaign, the book strengthens and broadens “a big picture” for the Judeo‐Christian faith. Stickney explores insights and quotes from the writings of Kierkegaard, Jung and Bonhoeffer. Because of the unique connection he had with Charles Schultz, bits and pieces of the “Peanuts” comic strip also brings laughter and levity.

Stickney’s position for a mysticism of darkness is based upon the Holy Bible, but the scholarship of innovative mystics like John of the Cross and Dionysius the Areopagite are included. Although offering no simple answers, nearly every page of the book illuminates an unconventional spiritual life of experiential theology.

A top 10 finalist in the 2015 New Look Writing Contest, “In The Dark: A Memoir of Religious Initiation, Doubt, Rebellion, and Discovery” is a personal and historical evaluation of disciplines and aspirations too often overlooked and neglected in present‐day Christianity.” It is Stickney’s conviction that the Divine Presence continues to communicate (John 5:17) through events and other people, as well as through an intuitive listening for a gentle whisper (I Kings 19:12).
