Star Athletes Partner with PeerWell to Launch ACL Reconstruction PreHab and ReHab App
SAN FRANCISCO (PRWEB) December 13, 2017 -- PeerWell, the healthcare technology company helping patients prepare for and recover from orthopaedic surgery, has announced an extension of its platform that is designed specifically for inpatient and outpatient anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.
PeerWell’s ACL reconstruction program, available on December 13, 2017, will help surgeons make sure patients are completely prepared for surgery. Patients will be given daily customized plans covering nutrition, exercise, pain and anxiety management, medical risk avoidance and home preparation.
Professional athletes, including Duane Brown, Arian Foster and Glover Quin, helped to inform the program, drawing from their own past experiences as surgery patients. ACL tears are one of the most common sports related injuries, with an estimated 200,000 ACL surgeries to be performed this year. Professional athletes are especially at risk for ACL injury; On average, 50 NFL players will suffer an ACL injury per season - roughly 1.5 players per team.
“I’ve had 14 surgeries and I can tell you, putting in daily work before and after is the only way to return to peak physical performance,” reflected Arian Foster, a four-time NFL Pro Bowl running back. “I wanted to make effective, daily support available to everyone facing surgery.”
Additionally, patients will have access to PeerWell’s new-to-medicine range of motion tracking capability using the existing accelerometer and gyroscope inside their smartphones.
“What I love about the program is that it allows patients to track knee range of motion using only the smartphone,” began Doctor of Physical Therapy Michael Lau PT, DPT, CSCS of the online education platform The Prehab Guys. “Regaining range of motion before surgery or immediately after is one of the biggest prognostic factors for a successful ACL reconstructive surgery. PeerWell is changing the game, allowing patients to measure their range of motion and begin working on their movement, even before their first physical therapy appointment."
PeerWell’s range of motion tools are the latest in the series of proprietary data collection methods the company uses to inform its artificial intelligence system. This smart technology is what enables the platform to run autonomously, making it ideal for overworked providers and payers. To date, the company has collected over 1 million patient data points.
This ACL reconstruction program is available alongside inpatient and outpatient surgery programs for total hip replacement, total knee replacement, lumbar fusion, and microdiscectomy.
“The best partner I can ask for in the surgery process is an engaged patient,” said Dr. Nima Mehran, sports surgeon. “Patients who are involved in their own success daily have the best outcomes.”
