Orange County Dentist, Dr. A. Rassouli, Comments on the Link between Smoking and Drinking to Dental Filling Failure

The study, which was published in “Frontiers in Medicine,” explored the failure rate in composite resin fillings. Composite resin fillings, which are often called tooth-colored or white fillings, are a newer type of dental filling that offers patients a more aesthetic alternative to amalgam fillings, which are silver and contain potentially problematic mercury. Both composite resin and amalgam fillings were similarly durable. However, certain factors could increase the likelihood of failure in composite fillings, including lifestyle habits. Not only did those who drink alcohol experience higher filling failure rates, but men who smoked also had higher filling failure rates.
Understanding the factors that can affect the long-term success or failure of restorations can help Dr. Rassouli and patients make better choices when it comes to preventive and restorative dentistry.
