GPSip, Inc. Granted United States Patent 9,795,118 and Demonstrated 3X Battery Savings Using Patented “SkyShepherd®” Technology
MINNEAPOLIS (PRWEB) January 03, 2018 -- GPSip Inc., a developer, intellectual property holder, and licensor of Autonomous GeoGraphical Containment Technology™, announced that it has been granted US patent 9,795,118 for its development of a “Wireless Location Assisted Zone Guidance System,” which allows devices to autonomously determine their status relating to a complex geo-fence boundary or area.
SkyShepherd allows containment areas (geo-fences) in complex shapes to be created with progressive alert zones, and assigns them to other devices to be monitored and contained. The containment zone, alert zones, and other zone values are stored directly on the devices, using very little memory and processor time. As the location-aware device receives location information, it autonomously checks the on-board map to determine its status, and take action, if needed.
Tests with an unmodified Particle Electron and a Ublox PAM-7Q GPS module, performing a complex geofence operation over time showed the following results:
- Using standard location libraries and publishing position at 1hz = 1 Watt.
- Using the SkyShepherd technology and publishing updates only on status change = 0.3 Watts.
A 70% reduction in power consumption, without shutting off the cellular radio!
“Containment is a growing need of every location-aware device, and now you don’t need to sacrifice battery life,” noted Rodney Landers, co-inventor and CTO. “The market is experiencing an explosion of location aware IoT devices, and we believe this breakthrough will open up a greater number of applications for remote monitoring, of all location-aware devices, that have been impossible to implement with standard geo-fences because of the battery drain.” Mr. Landers added, “Since the status processing happens locally, the device only needs to communicate when there is a problem, or to give infrequent updates when things are good. Not having to transmit location information greatly increases security.”
“SkyShepherd represents a paradigm change and will revolutionize the way containment can be used to monitor location aware devices,” said Kevin Nieuwsma, co-inventor and CEO of GPSip, Inc. "We are thrilled to have been granted the patent for our invention, and look forward to partnering with industry leaders to accelerate the adoption of our proprietary Autonomous GeoGraphical Containment Technology.”
