The competition remains fierce and the margins narrow. Our annual analysis of the segment is an essential read for anyone selling into the foodservice distribution network.

Industry-leading retail financial consulting firm Information Clearinghouse, Inc. (ICI), through its F&D Reports division and sister company FDARMS, has released its Foodservice Year-End Review, which evaluates evolving trends in the foodservice distribution industry and ranks the top 25 industry players by annual sales.

While 2017 did not feature any industry bombshells as in the previous couple of years, it certainly did not lack excitement. Industry leader Sysco has not skipped a beat since its failed merger attempt with US Foods; the Company continues to expand its distribution reach, both domestically and overseas. US Foods and Performance Food Group, both fresh off of successful IPOs, rewarded shareholders with solid all-around performances, as both picked up market share in the still very fragmented market. Nonetheless, organic foodservice growth opportunities remain limited, as the expanding national and super-regional players have grown market share at the expense of the smaller operators.

In addition to the Top 25 foodservice distributor ranking based on sales, the Foodservice Year-End Review offers a closer look at the top industry players: Sysco, US Foods, Performance Food Group, Gordon Food Service, and Reinhart Foodservice. The report also details the past year’s most notable industry M&A transactions and provides an outlook on the challenges for foodservice operators in the coming year.

Commenting on the Foodservice Year-End Review, Robert Marzo, Division President of ARMS, stated, “As in the past, the industry is defined by a small group of behemoths, followed by a host of smaller regional operators. The size differential results in vastly different business models where the giants and the Lilliputians rarely compete for the same order; nonetheless, the competition remains fierce and the margins narrow. Our annual analysis of the segment is an essential read for anyone selling into the foodservice distribution network.”
