Public middle and high schools needing a boost for their sports programs have until January 15, 2017 to apply for a 2016/2017 California Casualty Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant. The application and information can be found at http://www.calcasathleticsgrant.com. Qualifying schools can receive up to $3,000.
The grant is named after California Casualty Chairman Emeritus Tom Brown, who believes that teamwork, confidence and sportsmanship are important in developing great students that become productive members of the community.
Since its inception in 2011, over $500,000 has been awarded to more than 400 high schools across the nation. Last year, athletes at 86 public high schools from 34 states shared $102,500 in athletic grants from California Casualty to improve athlete safety, offset participation fees or purchase much needed equipment. Examples included:
- Badly needed new uniforms for the Azusa High School, CA, girls basketball team
- A new pitching machine for the Prairie High School, Il, baseball team
- Uniforms for the Parkdale High School, MD, boys basketball team
- Warm ups, sweat shirts and shoes for the Roosevelt High School, OR, track team
- Safety equipment for the Shanksville-Stonycreek High School, PA, boys baseball team
Doug Goldberg, Senior Vice President with California Casualty said, “All students should be guaranteed a great education and also a chance to pursue their sports dreams. We are dedicated to helping educators in both pursuits.”
This year, middle schools are now eligible to apply. Applications are now being taken at http://www.calcasathleticsgrant.com. The deadline for consideration is January 15, 2017, with 2016/2017 recipients announced in April. Applications received after the deadline will be considered for the following year.
