Airline passengers get the opportunity to interact with the aircrew as they board the plane, but many are unaware of the air traffic controllers working behind the scenes to ensure a safe flight. They work with the pilots to ensure every flight that takes off results in a safe landing. Today, Cecil Miller gives an in-depth look at the industry and culminates his 58 years of air traffic control background and experience into his book, “The Other Side of the Mic.”
In “The Other Side of the Mic,” Miller guides readers through the timeline of aviation—from the first flight of the Wright brothers in 1903 to the unmanned aircraft used in battle today—and reveals the vital role air traffic controllers have played in keeping air travel safe. He draws from his years of experience with the Air Force at Edwards AFB Tower and Federal Aviation Administration to share his vision on the future of flight and air traffic control.
“I’ve seen a lot of books on airplanes and their pilots, but I haven’t seen any books that specifically talk about the role of air traffic controllers.” Miller said. “With ‘The Other Side of the Mic,’ I want to make readers aware of the difficulties and dedication of air traffic controllers and their significance in the history of aviation.”
“The Other Side of the Mic,” showcases landmarks in aviation history—including stories during the “Jet Age” and the “Race to Space”—while telling the behind-the-scenes stories of air traffic control. Miller has seen history be made in the air. Now he shares his role in that history from the ground level.
