I’ve lived and thrived with type 1 diabetes for 30 years. I’m excited to help lead us on our mission to educate, empower and provide equal access to medicine to everyone affected by diabetes.

The Team Type 1 Foundation, a nonprofit organization pursuing a global mission of education, empowerment and equal access to medicine for everyone affected by diabetes, is excited to announce Amber Medley as its new executive director. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 11, Ms. Medley has dedicated her career to supporting the diabetes community.

“After an exhaustive search, it was obvious that promoting Amber from within the organization was the best choice to continue advancing our mission,” said Team Type 1 Founder and President Phil Southerland. “Amber brings leadership and creativity to the Team Type 1 Foundation and a deep sense of commitment to the diabetes community.”

Ms. Medley’s resume includes over 20 years of development and financial experience in the nonprofit sector. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from North Georgia College and State University. For more than a decade, Ms. Medley has served as the development director at Camp Kudzu, a nonprofit organization that offers camps and events to Georgia's kids with diabetes type 1 and their families. During her tenure, Camp Kudzu experienced a 40 percent increase in development income. Additionally, she was the finance director for the Atlanta Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Ms. Medley started with the Team Type 1 Foundation as a volunteer and joined the organization full-time as the development director in 2016. Most recently, she has served as the Director of Outreach and Elite Racing for Team Novo Nordisk.

“I look forward to continuing to serve the Team Type 1 Foundation, our athletes, and the greater diabetes community,” said Amber. “I’ve lived and thrived with type 1 diabetes for 30 years. I’ve dedicated myself to this cause because I understand that not every person living with diabetes has access to the same services and support that I’ve been fortunate to have in my life. I’m excited to help lead us on our mission to educate, empower and provide equal access to medicine to everyone affected by diabetes.”

Since its inception in 2005, the Team Type 1 Foundation has donated 2.2 million test strips and 1,750 glucose meters and offered advisory support to the Rwanda Government for their National Diabetes Plan, which ensures access to sustainable diabetes care while limiting the government’s financial burden. In 2017, the Foundation expanded this diabetes support program to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In addition to collaborating with governments, healthcare professionals and individuals living with diabetes around the world, the Team Type 1 Foundation provides college scholarships to athletes with type 1 diabetes. Since 2014, the foundation has bestowed a total of 271 college scholarships to athletes with type 1 diabetes who compete in a NCAA or NAIA sport worth approximately $400,000 through its Global Ambassador Program. Off the field, the Global Ambassador athletes are tasked with raising awareness about Team Type 1’s mission in developing countries where access to diabetes management tools is limited. Each athlete participates in an extensive leadership development program designed to create the next generation of game-changers in the diabetes community.
