Monster Energy's David Wise and Cassie Sharpe Win Men’s and Women’s Pipe Finals at the Grand Prix in Aspen/Snowmass; Wise officially earns a spot on the USA Olympic Team
ASPEN, Colo. (PRWEB) January 12, 2018 -- Monster Energy would like to congratulate David Wise and Cassie Sharpe for winning Men’s and Women’s Halfpipe Finals at the Grand Prix in Aspen / Snowmass today. Monster Energy teammate, Brita Sigourney, placed second, which now makes her eligible to make the US Olympic Team.
As the fourth Olympic qualifying event within the series of five, all athletes laid it all on the line, with hopes of making the US Olympic Team. The best of three-run final kicked off with eight women taking to the 22’ superpipe first. The men dropped in next providing non-stop action for the swelling, energetic crowd that lined the sides of the pipe during the highly anticipated event.
Wise came into today’s contest with a goal in mind and skied with pure determination. He earned a 95.00 on his first run, which catapulted him into first place— a spot he held on for the entire contest. Wise went absolutely massive and charged the pipe with smooth style and technical trickery. This first-place finish, coupled with his win earlier this year at the Copper Mountain Grand Prix, earned Wise a coveted spot on the US Olympic Team.
“This feels so good, I am so thankful to have earned my spot, and look forward to representing Team USA at the Olympics!” said Wise, following his big win.
As the defending Olympic gold medalist, Wise has his eye on the prize, and will hope to maintain his title at this year’s winter games in South Korea next month.
Sharpe, 25, (Team Canada) was the most consistent female skier of the day and earned all three of her scores in the 90’s. She locked in first place with her first run score of 91.6. This was only bested by herself in her third and final run. Though it was a victory lap, Sharpe still came out swinging and put together a run that included a huge left 1080 which she stomped flawlessly. This impressed the judges, who awarded her a 93.2 for this run. Sharpe is coming off a big win at last month’s Dew Tour, and will look to continue her winning-streak at the upcoming X Games and Winter Olympics in PyeonChang, South Korea.
“All of the girls skied so well today, and I am just so excited for putting down all three runs— this was a great contest and I’m proud of how everyone skied,” said Sharpe after the event.
Brita Sigourney also skied consistently and placed second with her second run score of 89.2. Sigourney is now officially eligible to make the US Olympic Team based on this podium finish. She will look to the last Grand Prix in Mammoth Mountain, California next week to secure her spot on the US Team.
The Olympic qualifying action continues in Aspen tomorrow with Men’s and Women’s Ski Slopestyle Finals. Next up is Grand Prix Mammoth January 15 – 21.
