Monster Energy’s Maggie Voisin Takes Second Place in Ski Slopestyle Finals at the Grand Prix Aspen and officially earns nomination for USA Olympic Team
It was a suns out guns out kind of day as the world’s best skiers took to the pristine slopestyle course under gorgeous bluebird skies. As the second Olympic qualifying event for the men, and the third qualifying competition for the women, all skiers laid it on the line, vying for a podium spot. As the pinnacle of freestyle skiing, today’s event offered a preview of what we may see at Olympic Games next month in Pyeonchang, South Korea.
The two-run final put pressure on all competitors to pull out their best tricks on the gigantic slopestyle course, which featured a dual rail series up top and three jumps at the bottom.
Voisin, 19, who hails from Whitefish, Montana, was sitting in 7th place when she took her second run. She skied with passion and determination and stomped a run that included; a left 270 on the first rail, a stock slide on waterfall, then unleashed a series of 900’s on the jumps. These including a right 900, switch left 900, and finished with a gigantic left 900.
The judges took awhile to score, but finally awarded her an 89.00 for her efforts, which pushed her into second place.
Following the event, Voisin was visibly excited and said, “Today was awesome! The course was fun and fast, and I’m so thankful to have landed that run. It feels really good, and I look forward to the contests to come.”
Monster Energy teammates, Giulia Tanno placed just off the podium in 4th, and James Woods placed 6th in men’s ski slopestyle.
