Oogie’s Snacks LLC, manufacturer of Oogie’s Gourmet Popcorn & Seasonings, is kicking off 2018 with a bold new brand identity and new flavors.
"For more than a dozen years we’ve been creating delicious, healthy popcorn and seasonings,” said Eric Thier, Founder & President of Oogie’s. “When we started, building a brand of healthy gourmet snacks was the goal. But at the same time our reputation for innovation and expertise was growing, the popcorn category began to explode- and all of a sudden we found ourselves deluged with requests from others to help develop new items, new flavors, etc. Pretty soon our private label and store brand requests became so significant to our business that we decided to step away from the branded side for a while and focus mainly on the PL. Although we’ve been successfully doing this for years now, we always wanted to turn our attention back to the brand and show some love to Oogie’s again, so over the past six months things came together and we felt that the time is right to re-enter the retail side as well.
According to IRI-tracked multi-outlet data, retail sales of ready-to-eat (RTE) popcorn in the U.S. have doubled over the past five years, from $650m to $1.3b in 2017. “With years of experience in RTE Popcorn, we know our category as well as anyone and we compiled a ‘wish list’ of what we’d want to see in updated products”, Thier continues. “Our reintroduction formula is simple: let’s take all that we’ve learned over the years and apply it to everything. The result? Better nutritionals. Better ingredients. Better flavors. Award-winning packaging. And aggressive pricing. Not exactly rocket science, but focusing on each aspect has allowed us to create a really compelling,
competitive product line."
Products that call attention to specific claims are driving the strongest uptick in U.S. snack category sales, according to Nielsen. For example snacking products that are non-G.M.O. lead the way with an 18.2% surge in dollar sales for each of the past five years, followed by snacking products that are free from artificial colors/flavors (16.2%).
When asked for some examples of the updates, Thier said, “The nutritionals are category-leading in terms of fat and calories. The flavor profiles are all on-trend and are the result of our many years of product development. We looked all aspects of the products. Let’s take our packaging. Our packaging was called innovative and ahead of it’s time when it debuted around ten years ago- and like anything that’s good in our business, it was soon aped by lots of others. Today it’d be considered mainstream, if not downright boring. So for the next iteration, we geared up to again be cutting-edge and ahead of the curve, and looked at lots of options that would be considered strong, bold branding. We’re thrilled with the final result. We’ve already won a few awards with it and it hasn’t hit the shelves yet!”
Oogie’s 4.25 oz popcorn flavors will include: Movie Time Butter, Original Kettlecorn, Spicy Nacho Cheddar, Caramel Chipotle, Hickory Smoked Gouda, and Wisconsin White Cheddar, with most flavors also available in 1 oz snack size and 12 oz club size. Popcorn Seasonings will be available in Spicy Cheddar, Hickory Bacon, White Cheddar, Movie Butter, and Smoked Gouda. The items will debut at the Winter Fancy Food Show January 21-23, 2018 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA.
