Patients at risk for glaucoma – or those who have been diagnosed with this leading cause of blindness – will now have access to one of the area’s leading glaucoma specialists, Raju Sarwal, MD, who today announced his expanded glaucoma coverage into Smithtown for SightMD, according to eye surgeon,Jeffrey Martin, MD, FACS, Chief Executive Officer of SightMD.

Dr. Sarwal is the current president of the Suffolk Ophthalmology Society and has been recognized by Best Doctors of America every year since 2009. He is a frequent lecturer at the largest ophthalmology meetings in the United States and helps mentor other glaucoma doctors in the greater New York area.

Starting February 1, 2018, Dr. Sarwal will provide comprehensive glaucoma services for patients in the Smithtown office located at 260 Middle Country Road, Suite 201. His hours in Smithtown on the 1st, 3rd and 4th Thursdays of each month will be from 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM. Glaucoma patients at the Smithtown SightMD location were previously being seen by Glaucoma Consultants, who will no longer see patients at SightMD after January 31.

“We could not have asked for a more uniquely qualified and experienced replacement for Glaucoma Consultants than Dr. Sarwal,” said Dr. Martin. “He is board-certified in glaucoma management and patients are going to love his bedside manner and comprehensive understanding of such a vision-threatening disease.”

After completing his undergraduate work at University of Pennsylvania in 1994 - where he graduated magna cum laude – Dr. Sarwal earned his medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine in 1998. He completed his ophthalmology residency at University of Illinois at Chicago Eye and Ear Infirmary in 2002 and received his sub specialty training in glaucoma at the Duke Eye Center in Durham, North Carolina in 2003.

Dr. Sarwal is on faculty at Good Samaritan Hospital, Southside Hospital, and Long Island Ambulatory Surgery Center and is an active member of the American Glaucoma Society, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the American Medical Association. His hospital affiliations include Good Samaritan Hospital, West Islip, NY, Southside Hospital, Bay Shore, NY, Long Island Ambulatory Surgery Center, Brentwood, NY.

“Many patients are unaware that glaucoma is one of our country’s leading causes of blindness and is referred to as the ‘Sneak Thief of Sight,’ said Dr. Sarwal. “That is because there are very few warning signs associated with glaucoma and once vision loss has occurred, it is extremely challenging to have it restored. That is why we remind patients that ‘early diagnosis & treatment’ is the most effective way to preserve and protect your vision from glaucoma.”

With 24 practice locations across the greater Long Island area - and now expanding into the city - the growing SightMD team of physicians and specially trained staff are dedicated to maintaining the highest levels of patient care.
