Felix & Paul Studios Selected to Premiere 2 Groundbreaking VR Experiences at 2018 Sundance Film Festival New Frontier Exhibition
Park City, UT (PRWEB) January 19, 2018 -- 'Space Explorers: A New Dawn,' produced in conjunction with Facebook’s Oculus with participation from NASA, and 'Isle of Dogs Behind the Scenes (in Virtual Reality),' produced in partnership with FoxNext VR Studio, Fox Searchlight Pictures and Google Spotlight Stories, will be showcased at New Frontier’s VR venues which include The New Frontier Exhibition at Kimball Art Center, New Frontier at The Ray and The VR Bar at Music Café.
SPACE EXPLORERS: A NEW DAWN
'Space Explorers: A New Dawn' is an experiential virtual reality series about the new age of space exploration. Viewers witness firsthand the lives of both new and veteran NASA astronauts including Sunita Williams, Jeanette Epps, Victor Glover and Jessica Meir as they navigate the trials and sacrifices of their training and missions. The series explores the dynamics of camaraderie among space programs around the world and the collaboration between public and private space agencies, and highlights the latest advancements and plans for deep space exploration. 'Space Explorers: A New Dawn' shines a light on mankind’s most ambitious journey to understand our planet, our galaxy, our universe and our origins.
The first episode of 'Space Explorers: A New Dawn' was written and directed by pioneering VR creative directors Félix Lajeunesse and Paul Raphaël. The 20-minute virtual reality experience was captured and produced using Felix & Paul Studios’ full spectrum VR platform, including the studio’s proprietary, state-of the art cameras and pre- and post-production software suite. Headspace Studio, the leader in 3D positional audio processing, provided audio capture and end-to-end sound processing for the experience. 'Space Explorers: A New Dawn' will be exhibited in several Sundance New Frontier exhibition venues featuring synchronized Voyager™ chairs by Positron, the cinematic, full-motion VR platform featuring Oculus VR headsets.
On January 20, 2018, Lajeunesse and Raphaël will be joined by astronaut Captain Sunita Williams for the Sundance panel “THE JOURNEY TO SPACE:A VR PERSPECTIVE—IN CONVERSATION WITH NASA AND FELIX & PAUL STUDIOS” hosted by Comcast Ventures.
“'Space Explorers: A New Dawn' celebrates the wonders of space exploration, enabling viewers to experience the intense work, planning and personal sacrifices that go into every astronaut’s space mission,” said Félix Lajeunesse, co-founder and creative director of Felix & Paul Studios. “With the rise of national space programs around the world, the collaboration between NASA and private space companies and the ambitions of deep space exploration, we are entering a new era that can be intimately experienced through the medium of virtual reality
ISLE OF DOGS BEHIND THE SCENES (IN VIRTUAL REALITY)
Felix & Paul Studios will also be premiering 'Isle of Dogs Behind the Scenes (in Virtual Reality),' produced in partnership with FoxNext VR Studio, Fox Searchlight Pictures and Google Spotlight Stories, at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival’s New Frontier Exhibition. This 5-minute virtual reality experience miniaturizes the viewer inside the unique world of Wes Anderson’s upcoming stop-motion animated film in the context of an imaginative "fictitious documentary" surrounding the making of the film. The experience is slated for release February 16, 2018 on the Google Spotlight Stories app exclusively for Google Pixel phones and the Daydream View headset. 'Isle of Dogs Behind the Scenes (in Virtual Reality)' will be widely available March 2 in VR, 360 and 2D via YouTube and any platform that has the YouTube VR app, including Daydream and Sony PlayStation VR.
'Isle of Dogs Behind the Scenes (in Virtual Reality)' features a series of “on set” interviews with the cast of 'Isle of Dogs' (Bryan Cranston, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Liev Schreiber, Jeff Goldblum, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, F. Murray Abraham and Bob Balaban) as their dog characters in the film, and takes the viewer into an immersive, behind-the-scenes environment sitting alongside the animators and sets of Wes Anderson’s upcoming feature film. The experience gives the viewer an understanding of the unique and curious way that big and small and fast and slow all combine to create the magic of stop-motion animation.
“The challenges of filming the combination of characters in stop-motion and the animators behind the scenes—all in 3D, 360-degree VR—were very unique,” said Paul Raphaël, co-founder and creative director of Felix & Paul Studios. “We were thrilled to collaborate so closely with Wes Anderson to support his amazing concept and vision for 'Isle of Dogs' and are delighted with the result—an immersive, intimate experience that exposes viewers to both the magic of stop-motion animation and voiceovers from renowned actors.”
Felix & Paul Studios created a new version of their proprietary VR camera system to meet the challenges of filming both the characters in stop-motion and the animators behind the scenes. The camera features greatly reduced inter-ocular distance and integration with the film’s animation systems to bring real and animated worlds together. This allows the viewer to be placed in the world of the dogs and at their scale, resulting in a first-ever, highly immersive virtual reality experience. Headspace Studio provided audio capture and end-to-end sound processing for 'Isle of Dogs Behind the Scenes (in Virtual Reality).'
