Milton Hershey School Students Awarded Seven Medals at SkillsUSA District Contest for Career Technical Abilities
HERSHEY, Pa. (PRWEB) January 22, 2018 -- This month, 19 Milton Hershey School students competed at the 2018 SkillsUSA District contest where they tested their technical skills in multiple career concentrations. Seven students were awarded medals based on their abilities, knowledge and sportsmanship.
“SkillsUSA places students in real-world, high-pressure career situations, which allow them to showcase their skills and make decisions,” said Michael DeAcosta, the SkillsUSA advisor at MHS. “This is when students realize their place in the world and what they were meant to do. They acquire an appreciation for the dignity of work and become passionate about getting better.”
To prepare for the SkillsUSA contest, students collaborated with MHS staff members who mentored them throughout the year. Through weekly training sessions, students learned from professionals in their chosen field and expanded on their classroom learning.
“SkillsUSA has helped me develop my public speaking skills so I can put my best foot forward during presentations,” said Richard Coleman, an MHS senior and SkillsUSA gold medalist. “I also have gained a sense of confidence that no matter the situation, I am able to speak and perform well.”
The following students received medals for their exceptional abilities in specialized career fields:
• Casey Borowy—Gold Medalist for Restaurant Service
• Richard Coleman—Gold Medalist for Prepared Speech
• Jake Edwards—Bronze Medalist for Architectural Drafting
• Nickie Hamman—Silver Medalist for Crime Scene Investigation
• Marizah Moore—Silver Medalist for Crime Scene Investigation
• Mayghen Retzer—Silver Medalist for Crime Scene Investigation
• Solomon Myers—Gold Medalist for Technical Drafting
The MHS students who received gold medals will continue to train this spring and compete in the SkillsUSA State Championship. If they are awarded a gold medal at the state level, they will advance to the National Championship.
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry professionals working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. The SkillsUSA chapter at MHS is connected to the school’s renowned Career and Technical Education program. All high school students are required to choose from 11 CTE pathways where they receive specialized courses, hands-on learning opportunities, professional workplace experience, and more than 80 industry-recognized certification opportunities. Programs like SkillsUSA provide students with additional career exposure and preparation.
