Divorce Is Not The Answer; Rebuilding Is, After Adultery

Dr. Bonnie provides expert commentary on the adultery article by Jane Brody recently published in the New York Times.

Dr. Bonnie says getting rid of a person does not get rid of your problem! It gives you a bigger one. Couples should focus on rebuilding and fixing the problems adultery brought to the forefront rather than divorce. Not only is this easier, it will make a couple stronger and usually happier. Divorce can create a more complicated set of problems for everyone, financially, emotionally, and tear families and children apart.

She has a 98% success rate of couples staying together after the ravages of adultery. Her role model was her parents who made it to real life love after adultery, doing the rewarding hard work necessary for fear of intimacy.

She talks of their story, how they recovered, rebuilt, and restored the romance magic like so many of her patients in her book Adultery: The Forgivable Sin, with (Smart Heart Skills) tasks for alleviating common problems for couples during this tumultuous time. This has the potential for the most growth and bringing a couple closer and stronger than before!

Dr. Bonnie sees adultery as a wakeup call, a cry for help, to fix what was broken before, a dysfunctional attempt to stabilize a relationship. It's a catalyst to rebuild and fix problems never solved till this rude awakening woke up the relationship and the partners. Many partners like peace at any price which gives us a war. They have no idea how to problem solve to resolve issues; instead, they avoid them! Many like her parents are fearful of getting close so taken on a adulterous partner for "pseudo closeness, "giving little time and attention to keeping the fires burning.

She says new beginnings, the second time around, with the same partner and a new marriage is the ultimate, and so much less complicated then stepfamilies (which are higher in divorce and adultery than first marriages by the way). Getting rid of a person does not get rid of your problem.

Hard work and taking the time for healing during therapy sessions and at home pays off for the coming generations she says - she should know.
