Phoenix Technology Group Granted a US Patent On Its Wide-Field Retinal Imaging Technology
PLEASANTON, Calif. (PRWEB) January 31, 2018 -- Phoenix Technology Group, Inc. (PTG), offering advanced imaging platforms that serve researchers and clinicians from bench to bedside to help prevent blindness, today announced that on January 23, 2018 the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted U.S. Patent No. 9.872,618 (the ‘618 patent) titled “Wide-Field Retinal Imaging System.” PTG has exclusive rights to the patented technology, which can be found in the Phoenix ICON retinal imaging platform.
The ‘618 patent describes a revolutionary design for a wide-angle retinal imaging system that combines direct, annular illumination with an innovative optical system and sensor placement. The patent teaches hand-held methods for both contact and non-contact imaging of the eye. The resulting systems produces retinal images that deliver high contrast even for retinas with the darkest pigmentation while also providing a resolution improvement of 2.5 times that of legacy designs.
An embodiment of this technology can be found in the recently launched Phoenix ICON retinal imaging platform. The Phoenix ICON is a cart-based system with a hand-held camera, capable of capturing both bright field and fluorescein angiography images of the retina. Approved for general ophthalmic imaging of corneal, retinal, and external structures of the eye, the Phoenix ICON camera is light-weight, can operate for up to 6 hours on battery power, and includes a range of ease-of-use features including real-time zoom and a user-friendly touchscreen interface.
“Twenty years ago, I launched the first pediatric retinal imaging platform,” said Dr. Bert Massie, founder and CTO of Phoenix Technology Group. “Ten years ago, I founded Phoenix Technology Group to create a brand-new family of products that serve researchers and physicians from bench to bedside to help prevent blindness. Our research and innovation has led to the invention described in the ‘618 patent and found in the Phoenix ICON platform. This represents the first major break-thru in this category in nearly two decades, and I’m incredibly proud to see PTG bring next generation imaging to physicians around the world.”
The Phoenix ICON platform is already in use in 14 countries by leading physicians, nurses, and ophthalmic photographers. For more information about the Phoenix ICON platform go to http://www.phoenixtech.com/clinical.
About Phoenix Technology Group: Phoenix Technology Group (PTG) contributes to the fight to prevent blindness by providing physicians, clinicians, and researchers around the world with advanced technology to image and understand the eye. Founded by Bert Massie, Ph.D., inventor of the first digital camera for pediatric retinal imaging, our journey began with the creation of the Phoenix MICRON platform for in-vivo imaging of animals in eye research. Today, the MICRON platform is the standard for researchers around the world, combining bright field imaging, image-guided OCT, and focal and Ganzfeld ERG. Our breakthrough innovations with the Phoenix MICRON platform led to us to reinvent wide-field retinal imaging for human clinical applications, resulting in the recently launched Phoenix ICON product line. The Phoenix ICON platform is a revolutionary retinal imaging platform delivering high-contrast, high-resolution images, with quality you can see. You’ll find these breakthroughs inside the ICON platform: completely reinvented illumination, optics, and sensor technology, deployed on a modular platform that was designed from the ground-up for ease of use, reliability, and incredible image quality.
