Phoenix Technology Group Granted a US Patent On Its Wide-Field Retinal Imaging Technology

Phoenix Technology Group, Inc. (PTG), offering advanced imaging platforms that serve researchers and clinicians from bench to bedside to help prevent blindness, today announced that on January 23, 2018 the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted U.S. Patent No. 9.872,618 (the ‘618 patent) titled “Wide-Field Retinal Imaging System.” PTG has exclusive rights to the patented technology, which can be found in the Phoenix ICON retinal imaging platform.

The ‘618 patent describes a revolutionary design for a wide-angle retinal imaging system that combines direct, annular illumination with an innovative optical system and sensor placement. The patent teaches hand-held methods for both contact and non-contact imaging of the eye. The resulting systems produces retinal images that deliver high contrast even for retinas with the darkest pigmentation while also providing a resolution improvement of 2.5 times that of legacy designs.

An embodiment of this technology can be found in the recently launched Phoenix ICON retinal imaging platform. The Phoenix ICON is a cart-based system with a hand-held camera, capable of capturing both bright field and fluorescein angiography images of the retina. Approved for general ophthalmic imaging of corneal, retinal, and external structures of the eye, the Phoenix ICON camera is light-weight, can operate for up to 6 hours on battery power, and includes a range of ease-of-use features including real-time zoom and a user-friendly touchscreen interface.
