The tech industry added almost half as many jobs in December as it did in November

The IT industry added 7,500 jobs in December according to preliminary numbers released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Report on Friday, January 5, 2018.
“The tech industry added almost half as many jobs in December as it did in November,” said Jay Rollins, owner of ITJobsWeb.com, a leading IT jobs website. “The industry added 14,900 in November. Since December 2016, the tech industry has added 116,800 jobs.”
The multiple sectors that form the IT industry now employ 4,903,300 persons; this includes employment information from the data processing, hosting and related services subsector, the computer and electronic product manufacturing subsector, the computer systems design and related services industry group, and the management and technical consulting services industry group.
The data processing and hosting subsector added 400 jobs in December, down from the 1,300 jobs added in November. The subsector has grown by 5,900 over the past 12 months and now employs 307,000 persons.
The computer and electronic manufacturing subsector gained 3,000 jobs in December, close to the 3,500 jobs added in November. In the last 12 months, the subsector has grown by 11,200 jobs and now employs 1,053,600 persons.
Similarly, the computer systems design industry group also added 3,300 jobs last month after adding 3,500 the month before. The industry group now employs 2,078,300 persons, with 43,500 jobs being added since December 2016.
Management and technical consulting slowed dramatically, adding only 800 jobs in December compared to 6,600 jobs gained in November. Over the last 12 months, the industry group has added 56,200 jobs and now employs 1,464,400 persons.
Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment added 148,000 new jobs in December while the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1 percent for the third straight month. In 2017, payroll employment growth totaled 2.1 million, compared with 2016’s gain of 2.2 million.
