Community-based pharmacies that provide enhanced services and medication-use support maintain interpersonal relationships with patients and care team members that yield important data flows going well beyond the prescriptions they fill.

Last month, BestRx, a software solutions company whose mission is to deliver affordable, easy-to-use, tailored pharmacy software solutions that address the unique demands of independent community pharmacies, was granted Level 3 – active medications capability under the Pharmacist eCare Plan initiative.
The eCare Plan Initiative, created through a partnership between Community Care of North Carolina and the Community Pharmacy Enhanced Service Network in collaboration with an elite group of innovative health care tech companies, allows for more effective patient care by leveraging the patient-pharmacist relationship. Independent pharmacies often anchor care in underserved communities: Community Care of North Carolina’s research shows that Medicaid patients interact with their pharmacist 10 times more than with their primary care physicians. The eCare plans allow for pharmacies to be paid for the services and patient support that they render — much of which allows for better coordinated health care for individuals.
The multi-tiered certification structure allows for a phase-based introduction of pharmacist eCare plans into the market. BestRx is the first pharmacy management system to receive Level 3 – active medications capability. Their participation supports the continual improvement of eCare plan integration and ultimately leaders like BestRx make eCare plan innovation available to their customers, independent pharmacies well positioned to improve health outcomes in often under-served communities. “The innovation and forward-thinking of the 20-plus technology companies involved in the training and certification process is helping facilitate the national expansion of Pharmacist eCare Plans,” says Jay Williams, director of marketing communications for CPESN USA.
Level 3 certification permits pharmacies using BestRx pharmacy management software to communicate with other health care providers so that payers (Medicaid, Medicare, insurance plans, etc.) can validate and pay for services rendered by pharmacies. The Level 3 data capture includes services such as adherence packaging, the collection of vitals such as weight, blood pressure and pulse, immunizations and immunization tracking.
Troy Trygstad, the executive director of CPESN USA, says: “Community-based pharmacies that provide enhanced services and medication-use support maintain interpersonal relationships with patients and care team members that yield important data flows going well beyond the prescriptions they fill. Discharge medications, over-the-counter products and medications filled elsewhere are all part of an important patient-specific drug-use narrative. The ability to procure, produce and share an active medication list with a 360-degree view that transcends the pharmacy's own fill history is essential to a robust care delivery offering. Can you really provide good care without it?”
