Inaugurated February 2018, the expanded Vaught–Hemingway Stadium at Ole Miss in Oxford, MS, also needed an upgraded wastewater treatment plant with more capacity. PENETRON crystalline technology was specified for all concrete structures used in the new plant construction – after displacing a competitive product.

The Vaught–Hemingway Stadium at Hollingsworth Field on the University of Mississippi campus is an outdoor athletic stadium located in Oxford, Mississippi. The stadium is home to the Rebels college football team and was recently expanded to seat a total of 64,038 spectators.

BIGGER STADIUM DEMANDS DOUBLE THE TREATMENT CAPACITY
The $43.5 million project focused on adding new seating in the northern end zone of the 101-year-old sports facility, ultimately adding about 10,000 seats. In turn, the added capacity demanded upgrades to various infrastructure elements around the stadium – in particular, doubling the capacity of the stadium’s wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), which was carried out by Hemphill Construction.

“Initially, a waterproofing solution other than Penetron was selected for the wastewater plant,” says Christopher Chen, Director of The Penetron Group. “However, the local PENETRON team submitted the test results and performance data on our PENETRON ADMIX product to the project engineer at Engineering Solutions. After a comprehensive comparison, PENETRON was deemed the obvious solution and approved for use.”

ENHANCING CONCRETE DURABILITY
The concrete structures of a WWTP that house and facilitate the treatment process are exposed to constant and aggressive environments, including chlorides, sulfates, nitrates, disinfectants and other hostile compounds from the incoming wastewater or chemical process treatments added to effluent. PENETRON ADMIX substantially increases the durability of concrete by reducing the ingress of aggressive chemicals (pH 3-11) normally found in wastewater treatment environments.

“Wastewater treatment plants are expensive to build and to maintain. In addition, increasingly stringent environmental protections create additional pressure on treatment costs,” explains Mr. Chen. “This is why proven, crystalline-based waterproofing solutions that reduce concrete permeability, increase chemical resistance and minimize repair and maintenance costs are so important today.”

USED SUCCESSFULLY AROUND THE WORLD
PENETRON ADMIX was used to treat 2,500 cubic yards of concrete for the Vaught–Hemingway Stadium WWTP. The treated concrete elements of the plant included the headworks, grit chamber, the primary and secondary clarifiers, the settling tanks and aeration basins. The crystalline admixture enhances the structural durability of these key plant components despite the aggressive chemicals – and provides a self-sealing capability to seal any new cracks in the concrete.

“As a proven permeability-reducing admixture for hydrostatic conditions (PRAH) defined by the ACI, PENETRON ADMIX has been used successfully in wastewater treatment plants around the world,” concludes Mr. Chen.
