“It is through benevolence and gratitude that we recognize God has been merciful to us. How do we reach for God and others?” --Lydia Ruth

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Lydia Ruth’s new book shares that Christian love is about personal growth. The two commandments of Jesus were to “Love the Lord thy God” and “Love thy neighbor.” As the faithful learn to love God through benevolence and gratitude, they grow more compassionate toward their neighbors in need. In 1 Corinthians 13, there are acts of love discussed that demonstrate how people show compassion to others. It is with these acts, or aspects of love, that individuals practice love.

“If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, [b] but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” (1 Corinthians 13:2-7)
