“A Portrait of Mommy: Expressions of Love, Faith, and Perseverance” (published by Archway Publishing) by J. L. Coston shares the true story of a woman and her journey through life, lessons learned and the ability to stand firm through heartache with the help of her faith in God. This book is intended to inspire both the young and old to persevere, no matter what obstacles they are faced with.
In this combined autobiography-biography, Ellawese Darden, or as Coston calls her, “Mommy,” imparts her own story. It all starts in 1929 in Jacksonville, Georgia, with a challenging early childhood that temporarily forced her family apart. They eventually reunited in Pennsylvania, and Darden chronicles a coming-of-age journey filled with bullying, heartache and the abandonment of her mother when she was 18. As she matured into womanhood, Darden discloses how she learned to lean on her faith to find joy in everyday life while bravely facing hardship. At 88 years old today, she has a strong drive to continue to live and speak life to others.
By sharing her mother’s story, Coston wants readers “to be inspired and encouraged as they face difficult times and to smell the beautiful roses throughout the journey.”
