The financial industry added 9,000 jobs in January, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Report released on Friday, February 2, 2018.
“The financial industry jumped up from 6,000 jobs gained in December to 9,000 in January,“ said Jay Rollins, owner of FinancialJobsWeb.com, a leading career site specializing in financial job postings. “Over the past 12 months, the industry has added an average of 10,000 jobs per month.”
Employment in the financial activities supersector, which includes employment data from the finance and insurance sector and the real estate, rental and leasing sector, now sits at 8,518,000 employed persons with an unemployment rate of 2.2 percent. “Unemployment dropped down to 1.5 percent in December, from 2.1 in November and 2.2 percent in October,” said Rollins.
The finance and insurance sector added 2,100 jobs in January and now sits at 6,291,800 employed persons with an unemployment rate of 2.0 percent. Securities, commodity contracts, investments, and funds and trusts gained 3,500 jobs last month, while insurance carriers and related activities lost 1,700 jobs.
Real estate and rental and leasing added 6,500 in January, mostly within the real estate (+2,600) and rental and leasing services (+3,500) subsectors. Lessors of nonfinancial intangible assets added only 400 jobs last month.
Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment added 200,000 new jobs in January while the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1 percent for the fourth consecutive month. Job gains for the month occurred in construction, food services and drinking places, health care, and manufacturing.
