“In the face of the compassion-blunting political skirmishes which surround immigration today, here is a story straight from the heart of a wide-eyed ten-year-old girl, written by the wise hand of the woman that little girl became.” --Kim Jones
Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Kim Jones’s new book, “The Girl from Vietnam: One Girl's Journey to Freedom” tells the tale of a girl born only weeks after the Tet Offensive. At the age of ten, she and her family barely escaped death. In the aftermath of a treacherous war, the world class city of Saigon transformed into hell under the dictates of a cruel new government. The young Saigonese and her family fled to their old home in a peaceful village on the banks of a great river, but the repressive new regime soon followed. Risking everything, they put their trust, and their lives, into a frail and antiquated river boat.
What followed was a miraculous journey that delivered them to a Chinese fishing village in Malaysia then a refugee camp outside of Kuala Lumpur before they finally arrived in a strange and wondrous place called San Diego. It was a place free of the Viet Cong and the monsoon rains. It was also home to a yearly celebration in which kids wore costumes and demanded candy. There were many helpful people who greeted the newcomers with helping hands and open hearts. There were, however, others who labeled newcomers Gooks and worse. This is the story of Kim Jones and her family’s journey to a new life in America.
