Tólivar is an Asturian surname from the region of Asturias, Spain. The main character’s Asturian grandfather emigrated from Spain for Puerto Rico to escape what he saw would be an upcoming Civil War in Spain. There he joined the US Army and fought in World War II in Italy. His son was accepted to West Point, and he rose to the rank of general in the US Army. The Tólivars are of noble descent, being counted as hidalgos in the census of 1825 in Asturias.
