Larkspur native and Redwood High School (RHS) Alumna Dr. Jennifer Winward has donated the use of Winward Academy's suite of online learning tools to all students in Redwood’s first-ever AVID class. Lindsay Laven, a RHS substitute math teacher and mother of a Redwood alumna, also donated access to the platform for students seeking additional support in the after-school math program. The value of these combined donations is $125,000, and the access now available to these students will support their academic success and improve their preparation for college.
Students will benefit from access to Winward Academy’s full online curriculum of 250 hours of instruction and over 7,000 multiple choice questions to build their skills in all academic areas tested on the ACT and SAT and to thrive in math class.
The partnership between Winward Academy and Redwood High School facilitates an important goal at Redwood to bridge the opportunity gap. “Students with access to platforms like Winward Academy have a tremendous advantage,” shared Assistant Principal Sue Hall. “So it’s particularly exciting that the platform was both created and donated from within the RHS community to support the learning of our students.”
The AVID program, introduced to RHS this academic school year, provides intensive support with tutorials and strong student-teacher relationships. “These are focused and dedicated students who share the goal of admission to and completion of a four-year college degree. The Winward Academy platform is an exciting addition to our resources,” shared Emily Doran, head teacher of the AVID program. “With the Winward Academy platform, all students will have access to exactly what math they need with extensive support from arithmetic basics through pre-calculus.”
“My goal is to maximize the potential of all students. They need control over speed of instruction, easy access to study guides created based on their learning needs, and flexibility to study exactly what they need,” said Dr. Jennifer Winward, founder of Winward Academy. “I am honored to support the learning initiatives at Redwood and am thrilled to acknowledge the influence of Mr. Skip Lovelady, RHS science department chair, who was my mentor and teaching inspiration while I was a high school student at Redwood.”
