Urology Clinics of North Texas Announces Use of SpaceOAR® Hydrogel Procedure
DALLAS (PRWEB) March 14, 2018 -- Urology Clinics of North Texas is pleased to announce the arrival of a new system for men choosing to undergo radiation therapy for prostate cancer. The new addition, SpaceOAR hydrogel, acts as a protective spacer between the prostate and the rectum and has been clinically proven to reduce the risk of side effects from radiation treatment.
Urology Clinics of North Texas, based in Dallas, TX, was formed in 1999 by a merger of the practices of premier urology groups. Our mission is to give our patients excellent care and treatment of urological disorders, and to deliver that care courteously, caringly and efficiently. We strive to provide highly positive medical outcomes, affiliate with hospitals and other physicians who share a reputation for excellence, continuously expand and update our medical knowledge, skills and techniques and apply proven advanced technology and pharmaceuticals.
“The use of a rectal spacer allows us to greatly minimize the risk of rectal injury,” said Dr. Wilson L. Hernandez, the radiation oncologist at Urology Clinics of North Texas. “Space OAR is one of the great advances in the delivery of radiation therapy to the prostate and is a minimally invasive procedure.”
In April 2015, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared SpaceOAR hydrogel. In a prospective, randomized, multi-center clinical trial in the United States, patients treated with SpaceOAR hydrogel prior to prostate cancer radiation treatment demonstrated bowel, urinary, and sexual benefits through three years of follow-up. The study found that the patients that did not receive SpaceOAR hydrogel experienced a clinically significant decline in bowel, urinary, and sexual quality of life eight times more often than patients that received SpaceOAR hydrogel. The procedure can be done under local or general anesthesia and patients can immediately resume their normal activities. The gel stays in the body for approximately three months and is then naturally absorbed and cleared in the urine in about six months.
“Radiation therapy with SpaceOAR hydrogel offers men the unique opportunity to have their cancer treated while continuing their daily routine and preserve their post treatment quality of life,” said John Pedersen, CEO and President of Augmenix, INC. “We are excited that Urology Clinics of North Texas has adopted the SpaceOAR System.”
