The author shares, “Carrying a basket, Abigail most often makes the rounds of the neighborhood, asking if she can collect rose hips from the bushes. The folks know that she collects the hips without harming the plants, so they let her take as much as she wants. They discovered that this process also serves as a good, light pruning for the plants. She does sell some of the hips to Mrs. Acres, and she saves the rest to use in her soapmaking. Mother taught her how to make fine glycerin soap, and Mrs. Acres had taught her how to make the oils to scent it. She uses some of the soap as gifts and the rest she takes to the mercantile to sell. Not only does the soap smell wonderful; she had also figured out how to imbed rose petals, small dried flowers, leaves, and other greenery into the soap, making it pretty as well.”
