OSIsoft Extends its Presence in the Nation’s Critical Water Infrastructure with Deployment of the PI System at the Hoover, Davis and Parker Dams
WASHINGTON (PRWEB) March 13, 2018 -- OSIsoft LLC, a global leader in operational intelligence, today announced that the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation will deploy OSIsoft’s PI System as a part of its operational improvements at the Hoover, Davis and Parker dams, which supply power and water to customers across the Southwest. The PI System is part of its ongoing focus on mission assurance and decision support to help boost efficiency, improve cybersecurity and reduce operating costs at one of its most critical complexes.
“By serving up real time information on operating performance, power demand, asset conditions and cybersecurity, the PI System will help Bureau engineers better match power production with demand, minimize water losses and improve visibility of operations,” said Steve Sarnecki, Vice President of Federal for OSIsoft, “all while doing so in a secure and proven software infrastructure already in use throughout the Federal Government.”
The Hoover, Davis and Parker dams situated on the Colorado River power 26 turbines with a cumulative capacity of approximately 2.4 gigawatts. On average, the dams generate 5,800 gigawatt hours of electricity a year, or enough for more than 2 million people, while Lake Mead and the network of reservoirs created by the dam complex provide water to over 25 million people and businesses in California, Arizona, Nevada, Native American communities and Mexico.
The PI System will improve security and reliability across the dam complex by providing real-time insight into equipment health, pinpointing emerging maintenance issues and providing better awareness on network traffic.
The PI System has also been adopted by the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) as its common data infrastructure. WAPAs Desert Southwest region markets and transmits the power generated from the dams to 46 electric cooperatives, municipalities, state agencies and 23 Native American tribes.
“Being able to access, understand and use accurate, real-time data is absolutely essential in the water and power industries. With the PI System, the Bureau can take into account factors like demand variation, reservoir levels and changing weather patterns for daily operational decisions,” added Gary Wong, Industry Principal for Water at OSIsoft. “Real-time data from the PI System will also provide a means to craft long-term strategies for such balancing water distribution for a substantial portion of the Southwest.”
