50+ Athletes Can Now Register Online for 2018 New Mexico Senior Olympics State Summer Games
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (PRWEB) March 13, 2018 -- Online registration is now open to participate in the 2018 State Summer Games, to be held in Albuquerque July 18-22, 2018. Local Games are happening in 22 counties around the state from March through May. Registration for the State Summer Games and information on Local Games is on the NMSO website at http://www.nmseniorolympics.org. Athletes over 50 years of age do not need to pre-qualify in Local Games to participate in the State Summer Games. However, athletes will be required to pre-qualify at this year’s State Summer Games in order to participate in the National Senior Games to be held in Albuquerque in 2019. This year marks the 40th anniversary for the New Mexico Senior Olympics State Games.
Online registration is open through May 31 and late registrations will be accepted (with a $15 late fee) until June 8. Dates and locations for all the sports and venues are listed on the NMSO website. Athlete booklets and game flyers are available at senior centers in Albuquerque and around the state. Dec. 31 will be the cutoff date to determine age divisions as athletes compete in 5-year age divisions: 50-54; 55-59; 60-64, etc.
March is also a great month for individuals to sign up to volunteer to help with the State Summer Games, and NMSO is working with a new volunteer coordinator this year: Wendy Luck. Bringing more than 20 years of volunteer management experience trained as an EMT and firefighter, Luck has trained volunteers for emergency response and has worked with veteran groups. Last year, more than 500 volunteers signed up to stage the State Summer Games. Volunteers can sign up to work a 4-hour shift of their choice on the NMSO website by clicking on the “Volunteer” tab. The State Summer Games offers 24 individual sports for men and women over the age of 50 and is the largest multi-sport competition in New Mexico for active seniors. Cecilia Acosta, Executive Director of NMSO, said three new sports have been added for the 2018 State Summer Games: Hammer Throw, Powerwalk and Triathlon.
